Second Doctor - Patrick Troughton
Sept 67 - Jan 68 |
 |
Season 5
Cast:
| The Doctor - Patrick Troughton | Jamie McCrimmon - Frazer Hines |
| Victoria Waterfield - Deborah Watling | |
Plot:
The once-feared Cybermen have disappeared from the universe without a trace. On Telos, homeworld of the Cybermen, a secret expedition arrives from Earth on a quest to find the last remains of the silver giants.
Having blasted through a mountainside to "a pair of doors," the archaelogical party suffers their first casualty just as the TARDIS materializes. As usual, the Doctor and his companions, Jamie and Victoria, have turned up at the worst moment, but the Doctor's ready knowledge of the Cybermen soon wins them a begrudging respect. Despite regular warnings from the Doctor, the expedition probes deeper and deeper into the site, whose Cyberman artifacts always seem to have a life of their own.
Review [****]
Another classic story. In my opinion, the only story that used the Cybermen in the setting they belonged. Horror. In theory the Cybermen are a good, scary concept but have sadly been misused. Not here though. The story is simple. A team of archeologists are excavating the frozen Tomb of the cybermen of the planet Telos. Of course, no serious team of archeologists comes without secret schemes and traitors. And soon enough the Cybermen are wide awake.
The thing I like most with this story are the Cybermens voices. Slow, electronic, impersonal drawls. Wonderful stuff. The story itself is of the classic kind, reminiscent of many a Hammer movie and it works very well within the DW universe. The sets are welldesigned and the tomb itself is rather impressive. Acting is generally good, though there is a cringe-inducing fake american accent that tends to get on ones nerve. Fortunately the character in question is not one of the main characters. This is basically essential DW viewing. If you havent seen this story, get it. Now.

Tibet, 1935: English explorer Travers is determined to track down the mythical Abominable Snowmen which are said to roam the Himalayas. When the Doctor and his companions visit the nearby Detsen monastery they discover that the Yeti are all-too prominent - in fact, they are out to kill anyone who comes near. With Travers' help the travellers discover that the monastery is in the grip of the evil Great Intelligence, a disembodied force which has taken control of the High Lama - and the robotic Yeti are merely its deadly servants.

For the frozen being is Varga, leader of the Martian Ice Warriors, who came to Earth during its prehistoric Ice Age. After narrowly avoiding being caught up in a web-like substance on its journey through space, the TARDIS arrives in the tunnels of the London Underground railway system, only to find that the web is also in the tunnels - as is the Great Intelligence's Yeti.
How has this happened? The team learn that the impeding disaster was triggered nearly forty years before, after their previous encounter with the Intelligence. Professor Travers accidentally reactivated a Yeti, thus giving the Intelligence the ammunition it needed to plan another invasion attempt. The aim is simple: the Intelligence ants to drain the Doctor's mind. Army forces, led by Colonel Lethbridge-Stewart, help the Doctor and his team race against time to stop them in their mission. Can they make it?

The TARDIS brings the Doctor, Jamie and Victoria to the south coast of present-day Earth. Something nasty is lurking in the gas pipelines of the North Sea, and before long the nearby refinery is under attack.
Landing on a foam-covered beach, the travellers are at first mistaken for saboteurs. A number of the refinery personnel have been behaving strangely, and the base chief, Robson, is showing serious signs of stress. Meanwhile Maggie Harris, having been stung by a mysterious frond of sea vegetation, is menaced by the sinister engineers Oak and Quill.
As sentient foam and weed combine to frightening effect, it soon becomes clear that the danger emanates from beneath the sea. Can that really be a heartbeat coming from deep inside the refinery pipes? Will the Doctor and his friends be in time to prevent an entire take-over of Earth – and will they all escape with their lives?
