The Shadow's Agents
Earphones on the wall lead to Burbank, contact man - and through him go the master crime-fighter's instructions to his aids. Orders for Harry Vincent to report on the scene of possible crime, to lay the groundwork for The Shadow's approach; to Hawkeye and Cliff Marsland, in their underworld guise, the paths they are to follow; to Clyde Burke, reporter for the Classic, the necessary information to be gotten only through newspaper channels; to Moe Shrevnitz, taxi driver of first rank, word of transporting the master-fighter to his field of battle; to Rutledge Mann, hiding behind the "front" of an investment broker, the word to be ready with his invaluable aid; to Jericho, giant African, the stand-by message to aid, if necessary, with his terrific strength.

These, then, are The Shadow's agents...

Harry Vincent
First appearance: The Living Shadow, April, 1931.
The first novel (The Living Shadow) opens with a suicidal Vincent preparing to fling himself from a bridge. He was broke and his girlfriend had just married someone else. The Shadow intervened, saving his life. That began the relationship between The Shadow and Vincent, who became one of the most active and frequently-used agents.

Claude Fellows
First appearance: The Living Shadow, April, 1931.
The Shadow saved Fellows from financial troubles, and in return, Fellows was a communications man, who also did research (before Burbank and Burke). He was already an agent at the start of The Living Shadow. He was murdered in Chicago in Gangdom's Doom (December, 1931), and was the only agent to ever be killed.

Rutledge Mann
First appearance: Double Z, June, 1932.
An investment expert who ran into financial troubles. He decided the only way out was suicide, and on the brink of putting a bullet into his own head, The Shadow rescued him, providing a business and an additional income. In return, Mann was a link between the agents and The Shadow (especially prior to Burbank's expansion into this area), and also was used for information from members of financial circles.

Burbank
First appearance: Eyes of The Shadow, July, 1931.
central to communications for The Shadow and his agents. Very little is known about him, including how The Shadow recruited him.

Cliff Marsland
First appearance: Mobsmen on the Spot, April, 1932.
Marsland appeared to be a gangster who had served prison time for murder, but it is revealed that he never did actually commit the murder; simply took the rap for the brother of the woman he loved. More surprisingly, it turns out that The Shadow knew him during World War I. Cliff becomes an agent and works the underworld, often joining gangs undercover.

Hawkeye
First appearance: The Green Box, March 15, 1934.
A spy in the underworld, and quite an active agent. He was often teamed up with Cliff Marsland.

Moe Shrevnitz
First appearance: The Chinese Disks, November 1, 1934.
The Shadow saved Shrevnitz from criminals attempting to steal his cab and kill him. After that, he became The Shadow's personal cab driver. A very active agent, and the only agent used in the radio show (but there, in comic relief).

Clyde Burke
First appearance: The Death Tower, January, 1932.
An out of work crime reporter, The Shadow hired him to run a clipping bureau, providing research whenever The Shadow needed it. He later was employed by The Evening Star newspaper.

Dr. Rupert Sayre
First appearance: Master of Death, September 15, 1933.
Sayre's life was saved by The Shadow. In Treasures of Death (December 15, 1933), The Shadow was wounded and went to Sayre for help, at which time Sayre discovered Cranston's face under the The Shadow's hat. From that point on, Sayre became The Shadow's physician.

Myra Reldon
First appearance: Teeth of the Dragon, November 15, 1937.
Reldon aided The Shadow in Teeth of the Dragon, and he began using her after that. She was expert at disguising herself as an Oriental, and so usually only appeared in novels where this could be utilized.

Dr. Roy Tam
First appearance: The Fate Joss, July 1, 1935.
The Shadow and Tam end up working together in The Fate Joss, striving to recover a Chinese idol. From that, Tam became The Shadow's contact in Chinatown.

Jericho Druke
First appearance: The Chinese Disks, November 1, 1934.
The Shadow saved Jericho's life during a gun battle, and later was brought in as an agent. He possessed phenomenal strength.

Niles Crofton
First appearance: The Unseen Killer, December 1, 1934.
The Shadow saved Crofton from being set up by criminals in The Unseen Killer, and returned as The Shadow's pilot in The Plot Master (February 1, 1935). He was not an often-used agent.

Margo Lane
First appearance: The Thunder King, June 15, 1941.
It is explained in a later novel, The Hydra (December 1, 1942) that she met Cranston on a cruise. She originally was just someone who caused problems, but later became useful by being utilized to mix with members of high society. In reality, she was brought in due to the popularity of the radio show. Her appearance caused a great deal of consternation amongst some readers at the time.
