Tarzan: The Epic Adventures
The UPN series 'Tarzan: The Epic Adventures' starring Joe Lara in the title role, set out to do what had never been done before in a live-action televison series — return to the author's original material and explore the richly textured landscapes of Burrough's fantasy worlds. Although the show put forth an admirable effort, the attempt to revive Burrough's original vision of Tarzan as an intelligent and articulate human with highly developed animal instincts, failed. There were many puzzling mistakes, such as having Tarzan wear calf-length boots.

Tarzan and La of Opar Filmed on location in Sun City Kingdom in Africa, 'Tarzan: The Epic Adventures' captured the beauty of the tropical jungles, with dramatic waterfalls and lagoons to majestic mountain peaks and ancient ruins. Each episode was filled with stunning special effects as Tarzan conquered new enemies.

The Iron Mole Although the hour-long episodes weren't adapted directly from the novels, they did use Burroughs' characters and creatures, and were certainly truer to the author's vision than most previous versions. Tarzan battles reptilian Lacarians, bat-like Mahars and all manner of fantastical semi-human races, as well as giant spiders, sea-serpents, and other monsters as he travels to Atlantis, meets a lost Roman legion, and tunnels to the underground world of Pellucidar.

Joe Lara as Tarzan Although Joe Lara did a very credible job, the first season of Tarzan: The Epic Adventures was seen as too much "sword and sorcery" and not enough jungle adventure. The fault lay mostly in the direction the show took trying to capitalize on the popularity of such fantasy fare as Hercules: the Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess. It was decided that for a second season, Xavier DeClie would replace Joe Lara as Tarzan. A search was undertaken to find an actress to play Jane, but a second season was never made as the show was abruptly cancelled.

...

Colette de Coude A strange amulet discovered in the darkest jungle of Africa by Count de Coude sends Tarzan back to his homeland to stop his arch enemy Rokoff from unleashing his terrible powers.

Tarzan's life in Paris is turned upside-down when he attempts to thwart Rokoff's plan to steal a crystal amulet from socialite Colette de Coude. After two failed attempts on his life, Tarzan realizes that the so-called 'civilized world' is as perilous as the life and death struggles of the jungle. He and confidant Paul D'Arnot follow Rokoff back to Africa to rescue Collette and return the amulet to its proper place - the 'Temple of the Ancients.' Once in Africa, Rokoff teams up with Ahkmed Zek, a ruthless slave trader who will stop at nothing to obtain the riches prophesied in ancient writings - a pylon of gold that reaches to the sky.

Tarzan and Mugambi Mugambi, an Oxford educated African prince of the Waziri, befriends Tarzan while in the clutches of Ahkmed Zek. Together, they track Rokoff and Zek's army to the 'Temple of the Ancients,' where mysteries abound. Prehistoric monsters and snakes as large as the Zambizi river guard the gates of the Temple, hidden behind a secluded waterfall. Using his superior strength and intelligence, Tarzan passes the guardians, penetrates the mystical Temple, apprehends Rokoff before he can complete his plan. But to Tarzan's dismay, Rokoff has used the crystal to access a portal that leads straight to the core of the earth, to the land of Pellucidar. It is a strange and exotic place where Mora, a beautiful reptilian queen, rules a band of female warriors who turn into ravenous flash eating 'Mahars.' Tarzan and Mugambi must risk their lives to enter this strange land and return the crystal before Rokoff and Mora set out to destroy the world.

This is where the series begins...
