A year after the fight between Godzilla and Kiryu, Godzilla rose from the sea again. Unfortunately, Kiryu was still under repairs in the AMF dock, so, certain changes had to be made to make Kiryu combat ready. Kiryu's right arm, lost in its previous battle with Godzilla, was replaced by a new and better arm that could transform into a giant drill. Kiryu's shoulder-mounted pack, also lost during the previous battle, had to be replaced as well. The Absolute Zero Cannon needs a giant diamond for its power source. Since a large enough diamond was not available, so the Absolute Zero Cannon was replaced with the "Triple Hyper Maser."
